The Casa delle Letterature of Roma, conceived as a cultural centre specialized in Italian and foreign literatures of the twentieth century, is located within the prestigious Borrominian architectural complex of the ancient Oratory of the Philippine Friars in Piazza dell'Orologio, one of the most beloved sites of the whole municipal library network. The site was closed for restoration for ten years and is now completely renewed and equipped by City of Rome.
The Casa delle Letterature is the result of the cultural action promoted and realized in Rome by the City Dipartment responsible for Cultural policies (Assessorato alle Politiche Culturali). The aim of the project is to collect and further increase the treasure of experience and archievements built up during these years by the Official of Conferences and Exhibits (Ufficio Convegni, Mostre, Conferenze). As a matter of fact, the Casa delle Letteraturehas become the actual headquarters for this particular area of cultural planning as well as the centre for the conception and production of scientific, literary and editorial events, by combining scientific rigour with the objective of publicizing their activities to a wider audience.
The conception and the realization of the project, presented at the Centre thanks to the work of the team headed by Mrs. Maria Ida Gaeta, benefit from the co-operation of Institutions, Universities as well as public and private Associations in Italy and abroad. This wide range of relationships so far established will be strengthened and extended further in the years to come. In fact, an internationally-minded and interdisciplinary approach to cultural events is now considered essential.
The Casa delle letterature is the home of literature in the city as well as the site of literature for the city:
- an ideal meeting point for writers and readers;
- A space where groups and trends, public and private associations and institutions may exchange and share ideas and experiences;
- a centre enabling literatures, arts and communication to interact freely;
- an exibition centre;
- a structure conceived to make the access to literary knowledge easier and more effective;
- an internet-based laboratory and archives centre serving as a steady source of information aimed at preserving and enhancing the literary heritage on different media;
- a place for reading and surfing the web, an oasis to be visited, a cultural station in the very heart of Rome;
- an access channel to the whole universe of literature.
As an experiment there will also be available for the first time a new service of print-on-demand, made poddible by highly advanced printing technologies.
